However, in terms of retail and export trade, sales continued to grow: in 2019, the retail sales of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods increased by 0.9% in the major stores, and the trade volume between the 27 European countries exceeded 170 billion euros, an increase of 4% compared with 2018.

The European Union's statistics bureau is concerned about the development of the European textile and apparel industry in 2020, as data show that the confidence of the whole industry has been hit since the outbreak of the epidemic in March. The survey showed that more than half of the company's output and sales decreased by 50%, 90% of the enterprises were facing serious financial difficulties, about 80% of the textile and garment companies were laid off, and 1/4 of the enterprises were considering bankruptcy.

To ease the pressure on textiles and clothing enterprises, the EU statistics bureau has applied to the European Commission to provide tax relief for related enterprises and appropriately relax control over trade products among EU Member States to ensure the normal circulation of goods.
