According to a report released today by the media, the United States threatened to restrict India's export of cotton.

The report said at a recent meeting of the WTO Agriculture Committee that the United States once said that India restricted cotton exports and led the world.

Pakistan and Canada have also expressed concern about India's restrictions on exports, the report added.

The US Department of Agriculture said: "cotton production in 2011/12 is expected to reach a record high, coupled with a decrease in domestic cotton consumption, which may prompt the government of India to announce that export policy will become more relaxed in the coming year of sales."
